Touring with Maison Mollans

Maison Mollans

September 4 to September 12, 2017

Discover the food, wine and beguiling charms of the romantic Drôme Provençal.  Nestled in the heart of France’s Côte du Rhone is our home base, the Maison Mollans.  You’ll experience the region through its bustling markets, intimate country bistros and breathtaking landscape.  You’ll understand why Provence is called the “belly” of France while shopping for produce, fresh goat cheese and hearth bread.  Sip wine, munch on olives cured at the village mill and sample Mollanais olive oil while learning regional specialties.  Come to the land of lavender fields, olive groves and vineyards and share our Provençal lifestyle.

Monday: Relax and settle in  at the charming Hotel St. Marc, member of the logis France, before beginning your adventure.  This evening we’ll welcome you with an aperitif  to toast our upcoming week followed by an informal country dinner chez nous (in our home) at Maison Mollans.                   D

Tuesday: Head out to the busy Vaison market.  Meet our favorite cheese vendors, pinch produce, talk herbs, taste olives and smell the region’s  lavender products.  After our post-market lunch, we’llstop by tour local Tyrand vineyard for a tasting before heading  home to take a stroll, enjoy a set of tennis or relax by the hotel pool.  The evening is free to dine nearby or snack on market finds.   B, L

Wednesday: Spend the morning exploring our village. Stroll by the only church built during the French revolution, the chateau and the olive oil mill.  Begin the first cooking class at Maison Mollans at 2 p.m.  Learn the secrets of ratatouille and a lamb daube, plus a Mollans’ specialty, fresh white beans.  Mary, trained at the renowned Lenôtre Baking School, will demonstrate a lemon-almond tart.  Sip wines from the area and a Muscat-de-Beaumes-de-Venise. B,D

Thursday: Discover the delights of Nyons, stoping first at the family run Domaine des Arches offering homemade jams and honey.  Explore the Nyons’ Thursday market and visit the cooperative for oil, wine and their famous olives perfumed with herbes de Provence. Continue into the countryside to La Charette Bleu, sip rosé, order a long lunch and slowly comprehend the delicious Provençal pace.          B,L

Friday: We head back to Vaison la Romaine to focus on its rich history.  We’ll visit the cathedral dating from the 11th century and the medieval upper village.  After a quick stop at the artisan nougat maker, we’ll have a pissaladiere lunch and head out to discover several top Rhone vineyards each with its own personality.  This evening taste these wines along with a cheese sampling.                              B, L, D

Saturday: Venture to Buis les Baronnies, stopping by our favorite baker and at Bernard Leget’s, the well known herb specialist.  At the distillery, taste apricot, thyme and Provençal flower liqueurs.  We’ll lunch en route after a breathtaking drive.  This evening, learn to make tapenade served with the rustic bread, fougasse, and local sausage.                  B, L, D

Sunday: Sunday lunch is sacred in France and Provence is no exception!  After a leisurely morning drive into the mountains, we land in the tiny village of  Plaisians for a fabulous country lunch.  The route is as beautiful as the food is tasty.  Settle in for the classic Provençal meal with local fish, lamb, and cheese plus dishes like caillettes that are some of the best in all of Provence. After lunch, we’ll head back to Mollans.                B, L

Monday:  Our last full day together offers the GRAND MOLLANAISE.  Begin cooking in the morning, followed by a picnic lunch.  Finish organizing in the afternoon followed by our Provençal banquet .             B, L, D
